Altitude will give to our pro cyclists an advantage when racing resumes.
Q&A | Mark Cavendish
[Bahrein-McLaren Team]
Mark, for you it's first time ever here, let's talk about some crazy experiences you'd like to talk about regarding your stay in Livigno.
"Well, I never expected to have snowy days on June, for me it's unbelievable, I've been so excited about that.
Living on 2220m above sea level is an ideal place to train, at the beginning of our stay
I was short of breath, I felt like I can't get enough air into my lungs. [LAUGHING]
But I'm sure it can help us with our preparation."
How does altitude training benefit a World Champion sprinter such as yourself?
"We all know about the beneficts when you train and live to high alititude for a period:
when you compete at lower altitudes, you get a natural boost to the muscles
where additional oxygen is available.
I am also a sprinter and Livigno offers some great "flat segments" for interval training, laps and more.
What's your impression of Hotel La Tea, Livigno?
"I love this place, the Owner Michela warmly welcomed me in to her alpine hotel
and she makes me feel at home everytime."
Did you try any of the local foods? What dishes did you enjoy the most?
[LAUGHING] "I'm a pizzoccheri lover: I chose always them when they were on the menu.
Even Bresaola I appreciated a lot, I probably ate it too much, I need to stop binge eating! "
How did you manage during the COVID-19 lockdown?
"Basically, I trained indoor 20 hours per week, adding 10 hours in the gym at home."
What the fastest speed have you ever reached?
"128km /h! I saw it on Tour de Swisse 2009.
If I could use St Moritz bob [photo on @markcavendish], we could probably do it better." [LAUGHING]
What are your expectations about his crazy upcoming season?
@Gaspa8r: "I'm going to compete at Tour of Poland on August, after that we'll prepare some classic event.
For sure the Belgian appointments will be exciting to race expecially this year.
In your opinion, which will it be the strangest or most unusual race this year?
@Gaspa8r: "With no doubt, "Tour of Lombardy" will be an interesting race: It has been moved to August 15th, earlier than classic scheduled time (called as well "the Classic of the falling (dead) leaves").
It is traditionally the last of the five 'Monuments' of the season, considered to be one of the most prestigious one-day events in cycling, and one of the last events on the UCI World Tour calendar.
Probably the level will be super high and we'll have some surprises."
Gaspa, you're turning 38 this year, that's a lot of expereince in the world of pro cycling,
how many times have you chosen Livigno as a place for altitude training?
@Gaspa8r: "I had the privilege of training here two previous time Under 23 time, then after 2005 as professionist, I am now training here every year, I even call Hotel La Tea, Livigno my third home!
Sometimes I visited this little piece of Heaven on Earth as well during winter time,
always awesome memories."
Best food?
"As I come from just 20km outside of San Daniele del Friuli, cooking has always been close to my heart.
I really appreciate Valtellina cuisine: pizzoccheri, bresaola, sciatt, but expecially the Nebbiolo wines here,
I love them."
